July - September 2003 Progress Report

A Message from Our Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste
August 8, 2003

Aloha and welcome! It is my pleasure to honor the “Founding Friends” of the Kaua`i Aloha Endowment and the beautiful environment created by Tara and Peter Guber.

This project began with a vision. It was a vision of Kaua`i and the preservation of its natural beauty, culture and the spirit of the people. The group of volunteers who began the journey to realize this vision were passionately committed to Kaua`i and ensuring its resources would be forever available.

It is with the warmest mahalo that I acknowledge the participation and efforts of everyone involved with the Kaua`i Aloha Endowment. You are now part of this vision by becoming a “Founding Friend” this evening. On behalf of the County of Kaua`i, mahalo for your contribution ‘To Protect, Preserve and Enhance Kaua`i’s Island Treasures... Today, Tomorrow and Forever.’

Aloha pumehana,

Our Purpose

The Kaua'i Aloha Endowment, in collaboration with Hawai'i Community Foundation, was established to insure that resources will forever be available to preserve that which we most cherish about Kaua'i: her natural beauty, culture and the spirit of her people.

Remember, there are four ways to contribute to Building the Endowment at this time: Financially, In-Kind Service, Purchasing or Selling Products, and most of all each of us can Share the Message of the Endowment with everyone.

We want every man, woman and child to know of our Kaua'i Aloha Endowment.

Recognition

Kaua`i Aloha Endowment appreciates the continued support of the staff of the Hawai`i Community Foundation, in particular Nani Larsen and William Trugillo of the Kaua`i office of HCF with the guidance of the President and CEO, Kelvin Taketa. A heart-felt Mahalo to all who have contributed to the Kaua`i Aloha Endowment during July, August and September, 2003.

Aloha—The Joy of Service in Action

Founding Friends Event. On August 8 the Kaua`i Aloha Endowment and Tara and Peter Guber hosted a Founding Friends event at the Gubers’ incredibly beautiful Tara Plantation Estate. It was a memorable occasion for all—and a thrill to see more than double the number of anticipated guests, whose donations of $1000 per person, or $1500 per couple, continue to allow the Endowment to grow.

So many mahalo go to our generous guests, supporters and performers. Mahalo to all who enjoyed and contributed to the beautiful ambiance and gracious hosting of this lovely gathering. Mahalo to Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom and her band for a fantastic performance, offered as a ho`okupu (gift) to the Endowment. Mahalo to Puna Dawson and the Kanuikapono Learning Center Charter School for their ho`okupu—a fabulous performance, plus leis from the children to all of our guests. Mahalo to Kehaulani Kekua of the Kaua`i Heritage Center for her ho`okupu—a powerful oli (chant) and pule (blessing). It was an extraordinary evening, rewarding us with vivid memories.

Mayor Bryan Baptiste wrote a beautiful letter included in this newsletter. On the next page, we express our heartfelt appreciation and warm mahalo to the Stewards of Aloha in Action who made the August 8 event a resounding success.
