July–September 2002 Progress Report

A Message from our
Mayor Maryanne Kusaka

Just recently, our community came together to celebrate and support our Ambassadors of Aloha program, a project that provides scholarships to our island's most talented youth.

This beautiful gathering was also a time to look back on the visions I had when I began my tenure as Mayor of Kaua'i, especially those visions that became realities. As with all sentimental journeys, this one turned my thoughts to the many dreams ahead we can realize together.

There are so many initiatives to continue, create, and support on our lovely island home. At the heart of all of them is our unique Aloha Spirit. What makes us, as Kauaians, special, is the way we approach projects and relationships. Our people, our quality of life, the preservation and enhancement of our unique lifestyle is Kilohana, above the rest, precisely because of our Aloha Spirit.

There is immense beauty in that multifaceted concept we call the Aloha Spirit. The Kaua'i Aloha Endowment has the great honor of sustaining and amplifying this Aloha Spirit within each of us.

Remember, there are four ways to contribute to Building the Endowment at this time: Financially, In-Kind Service, Purchasing or Selling Products, and most of all each of us can Share the Message of the Endowment with everyone.

We want every man, woman and child to know of our Kaua'i Aloha Endowment.

Recognition

It is important to recognize and appreciate the continued support of the staff of the Hawai'i Community Foundation, in particular Nani Larsen and William Trugillo of the Kaua'i office of HCF with the guidance of the President and CEO, Kelvin Taketa. A heart-felt Mahalo to all who have contributed to the Kaua'i Aloha Endowment during July, August and September, showing support for the purpose of the Endowment.

Aloha—The Joy of Service in Action

Kaua'i Aloha Endowment is a grassroots, community-based Endowment and is created from the hearts of Kauaians in service to Kauai. The Endowment has now raised over $100,000.00 without any operating funds. Phase I, Establishing the Endowment Fund, is now complete.

Financial and Legal Service

- Phase II, Sharing the Message - Building the Endowment, has begun. The Board of Advisors established, in May, a nonprofit called Friends of Kaua'i Aloha Endowment, to support the Phase II fundraising goal of $1 million. It supports the Endowment in two ways: creating operating funds and assisting in building the Endowment fund itself through effective marketing. Thank you to Kaua'i's Hindu Monastery for their swift achievement of this goal.

- We are delighted to have First Hawaiian Bank as our corporate trustee for the Kaua'i Aloha Endowment Fund, and Bank of Hawai'i holding our Friends of Kaua'i Aloha Endowment operating funds. Thanks to both Mike Murakoshi and Curtis Tom of the two banks, respectively, for their continued support and assistance as members of our Finance Committee. The committee is chaired by Mike and will be working to connect the banking industry on Kaua'i with the Endowment. Do watch for creative developments in this area.

- Samuel R Blair of Blair & Wong has offered legal counsel to Kaua'i Aloha Endowment. Thank you, Sam.

Committee Reports

- The Marketing Committee, under the direction of Stephanie Kaluahine Reid, Princeville Corporation and Hotel's Director of Public Relations, and with Board approval, has engaged Tsunami Marketing's Melissa McFerrin, Account Director, and the Tsunami team, to co-design the foundation of our marketing and communications strategy. Val and Robert Rekward, founders and owners of Tsumani Marketing, are supporting the Endowment through their creative corporate enterprise. The initial committee for this phase includes Stephanie and Melissa, Sue Kanoho, Marilyn Wong, Roberta Haas and Barbara Curl. Thanks to all for their commitment, and special thanks to Kaua'i's Hindu Monastery for volunteering to print our updated brochure.

- We have created a special Product Distribution Committee headed by Barbara Smith of Hanalei and Michele Williams of Kapaa. The initial committee members also include Ingrid Noble, Kaua'i's Hindu Monastery and Barbara Curl. Thank you.

How You can Make a Difference

- There are four ways to contribute to Building the Endowment at this time: Financially, In-Kind Service, Purchasing or Selling Products, and most of all each of us can Share the Message of the Endowment with everyone.

- The following products are offered from the Endowment for purchase for you and as gifts for your family and friends. These purchases will contribute to Friends of Kaua'i Aloha Endowment which will then help to expand the infinite possibilities of attracting what is needed for us to "Build our Endowment." The products - Aloha T-shirts, Magnets (round and square), Posters, Notecards and Decals, are just beginning to be sold in local stores that support the Endowment. Please see the enclosed flyer for more information. These products range from $.75 to $20.00 and can be purchased in quantities for business and holiday gifts. Everyone can now be included in contributing to the Endowment.

- A unique program is under way, created in partnership with Kaua'i's hotels, vacation rental industry and activity destinations to raise funds from off island for Friends of Kaua'i Aloha Endowment. The program is to auction donated hotel and vacation rental packages on eBay. We've found that it's created another marketing opportunity to position and expose Kaua'i as a premier destination. Linda Masterson is heading the Hotel Program and Barbara Smith is heading the Vacation Rentals Program. A special thank you to Craig Maas for co-creating with us the original idea and offering his beautiful Hale Mana home as our first vacation rental. Stephanie Kaluahine Reid offered our first hotel package which included a stay at the Princeville Hotel, tours of Limahuli Gardens and Na Aina Kai Gardens, and dinner for two at Postcards Cafe. Thanks to you all. Please invite your friends and family to explore our occasional eBay offerings for their next visit. It's a real value.

More to Come...

- Also please keep in mind this is all done by heart-felt volunteer contributions. We ask for your blessing and patience with our process. There is more emerging and we will continue to express to you our appreciation and gratitude as well as our progress. The Kaua'i Aloha Endowment belongs to all of us. We are all responsible co-creators in its successful unfolding, as we leave a legacy for Kaua'i and our Kauaian Community.
