AprilJune 2002 Progress Report
A Message from our
Mayor Maryanne Kusaka
I have always thought of summer as a time of new beginnings. Perhaps that’s because it’s the close of another school year, and hundreds of seniors are looking toward their future with great anticipation.
This year, I was invited to deliver a commencement address to the graduating class of a small private school on Kaua‘i. It is always a challenge to find a message that can have significant meaning to a young person at such a pivotal time. I decided to talk about volunteerism and service to one’s community
It is my belief that a lifetime commitment to community service must start at a very young age. Children surrounded by family and friends who are active volunteers in their communities are much more likely to model that behavior as adults. Witnessing the extraordinary results of volunteerism can be a life altering experience. On Kaua‘i, our children are blessed to be surrounded by example after example of the power of community service.
Our collective support of the Kaua‘i Aloha Endowment serves as perhaps the most profound illustration of how love for one’s home can be expressed unselfishly, and in a manner that benefits all of us and the generations to come. Please join us in this historic endeavor.
Aloha Pumehana
Our Purpose
The Kauai Aloha Endowment, in collaboration with Hawaii Community Foundation, was established to insure that resources will forever be available to preserve that which we most cherish about Kauai: her natural beauty, culture and the spirit of her people. It will endeavor to unite Kauaians and Kauaians-at-heart in Aloha. This Endowment will endeavor to unite all Kauaians and Kauaians-at-heart in Aloha.
A heart-felt Mahalo to all who have contributed to the Kauai Aloha Endowment during April, May and June, showing support for the Vision and Purpose of the Endowment.

The Kauai Aloha Endowment Vision is to Protect, Preserve and Enhance Kauai’s Unique Treasures
Today, Tomorrow and Forever.
While the Endowment fund at Hawai‘i Community Foundation continues to build, our emphasis has been creating a strong internal structure, planning a Campaign for Community Awareness, Development and Grant Giving Stategies.
Our nonprofit, Friends of Kaua‘i Aloha Endowment, now exists to generate operating funds and eventually investment funds for the Endowment. The address is PO Box 3007, Lihue, Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, 96766, tel. 808-246-6700. An initial website, www.kauaialohaendowment.org, is offered thanks to Kaua‘i’s Hindu Monastery and Bill Peay. Please explore and share it with others.
A beautiful art print has been donated for our Endowment fundraising. At this time we’re creating notecards, stickers, tee-shirts, magnets and posters featuring the artwork, which will all be completed in the fall.
Barbara Curl, Chair, Kauai Aloha Endowment
