January - June 2004 Progress Report

A Message from Our Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste
August 9, 2004

The Kaua`i Aloha Endowment is a unique contribution to this community, one of which we can be proud. The Endowment is truly an entity that supports Kaua`i and Kaua`i’s people through the fund that is growing now, to live in perpetuity.
The Kaua`i Aloha Products are just a part of the program to build the Endowment fund. The design and the products were offered as a gift by Kauaians, and they reflect the spirit and aloha of our beautiful Garden Island. It is my hope you will be able to enjoy these products yourselves, or use them as gifts* for your friends, family and business associates.
This is yet another example of partnership for the betterment of Kaua`i, between the community, visitors, businesses and the Endowment. On behalf of the County of Kaua`i, I encourage your support of the Kaua`i Aloha Endowment—when you support the Endowment, you are supporting Kaua’i.

Aloha pumehana,

* A note from the Kaua`i Aloha Endowment, Happy Holidays
Thank you for your continuing support and just a reminder that the holidays are rapidly approaching. The Kaua`i Aloha Products would make beautiful gifts for family, friends and business rememberances, serving you and our Kauaian community.

Recognition

Kaua`i Aloha Endowment appreciates the continued support of the staff of the Hawai`i Community Foundation, in particular Nani Larsen of the Kaua`i office of HCF with the guidance of the President and CEO, Kelvin Taketa.

Aloha—The Joy of Service in Action

Aloha Products enter Lihue Wal-Mart. In early 2004, the first T-shirts, greeting cards and other products moved across the checkout counter. No easy feat, considering how long it took to get there from initial conversations between Wal-Mart and Endowment leaders. “We’ve been very fortunate. It’s been a long haul,” said Barbara Smith, a retired teacher and volunteer Endowment product distributor. Wal-Mart is based elsewhere, so that meant going up the chain of command to the mainland to get the OK, she continued. And no new products enter Wal-Mart without a rigorous review process. The Aloha Products are now prominently displayed just behind the checkout counters along the main aisle. We are grateful for Barbara’s and other volunteers’ perseverance, and the special helpfulness of Wal-Mart officials, especially Tom Munson of O`ahu and Janie Whitehead of Kaua`i.
