January–March 2003 Progress Report

A Message from Maryanne Kusaka
Mayor, County of Kaua`i, 1994-2002

Kaua`i is an island that demands superlatives. Her oceans, bordered by endless miles of golden sandy beaches, are more jewel-like that any of her sister islands. Kaua`i was the first to be discovered by Captain James Cook, and the last to yield to foreign dominance. Only on Kaua`i does the fragrant mokihana berry grow. This is where the legendary little people, the Menehune, flourished and performed their magic. In so many ways, we are unique! As newcomers to this special place, we are welcomed and embraced by the spirit of Aloha; we are invited to nestle among the warm smiles and to be captivated by the graciousness of our golden people.

Kaua`i has a unique quality, one that makes it stand out above the rest. It is Kilohana. There is a spirit of friendship, of sincerity and warmth-truly what is meant by living Aloha. It is the compelling nature of Kaua`i's people embodied in the exquisite faces of our children who claim a multi-ethnic heritage. Here one can discover the most gracious ambassadors of the Aloha Spirit who act as stewards that help to keep our island beautiful and one of the safest places to visit. On this island, Aloha truly lives in the hearts of its residents.

Kaua`i Aloha Endowment Fund is where you will be welcomed and appreciated with Aloha, just as you have been welcomed to our shores. With your help we can continue to protect the unique qualities that set Kaua`i apart from the rest, the qualities that make Kaua`i Kilohana.
