JanuaryMarch 2002 Progress Report
A Message from our
Mayor Maryanne Kusaka
Recently, at the celebration of the birthday of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole in Poipu, I was reminded about the special and sacred history of Kauai. It was through the memory of the inspired leadership of great men and women such as Prince Kuhio, that the indomitable spirit of Kauai has endured throughout the years.
As Hawaii’s second delegate to Congress, Prince Kuhio was successful in securing ceded lands for native Hawaiians through the Hawaiian homes Commission Act of 1920. This was perhaps his greatest legacy, and it benefits people of Hawaiian ancestry to this day. Through his important work, those with the deepest connection to this place that we love so dearly are guaranteed the opportunity to provide the stewardship for this landthe ‘aina.
Those of us who are not native Hawaiians also have the opportunity to participate in the preservation of Kauai’s natural splendor and its rich cultural ancestry. The Kauai Aloha Endowment is designed to be the channel between our history and our future. In the spirit of Prince Kuhio, let us rise to the occasion and take ownership for the preservation of Kauai’s very special gifts. I hope you will choose to join us in this important work.
Aloha Pumehana
Our Purpose
The Kauai Aloha Endowment, in collaboration with Hawaii Community Foundation, was established to insure that resources will forever be available to preserve that which we most cherish about Kauai: her natural beauty, culture and the spirit of her people. It will endeavor to unite Kauaians and Kauaians-at-heart in Aloha.
A heart-felt Mahalo to all who have contributed to the Kauai Aloha Endowment during January, February and March, showing support for the vision and purpose of the Endowment.

Ways to ServeAloha in Action
The Kauai Aloha Endowment Vision is to Protect, Preserve and Enhance Kauai’s Unique Treasures
Today, Tomorrow and Forever.
• To our knowledge, no other island or community from the grassroots level has ever endowed itself. Our Vision inspires us to grow our Endowment for generations to come, in perpetuity; and to unite and honor Kauaians and Kauaians-at-heart.
• Our service is to inspire, educate, and engage all Kauaians and Kauaians-at-heart in the Vision, Purpose, and Service of the Endowment. We are now being offered the opportunity to continue to make a difference and be of service in three ways: contribute financiallyto the investment fund and/or operating fund, contribute your service, and share the message of the Endowment. There will be only one Kauai Aloha Endowment and everyone is invited to participate!
• In gratitude, we thank the initial Founding Friends, all the Contributing Friends and Volunteers who courageously committed to the Endowment when it was only a Vision, and who continue to support and share the message of the Endowment now and as the Vision unfolds.
If you are one who deeply loves Kauai and values its unique treasures, in the Spirit of Aloha, please share the message by inviting others into our growing Ohana. The Kauai Aloha Endowment provides a way to express your gratitude, your heartfelt Mahalo to this magical tropical island.
