October–December 2002 Progress Report

A Message from our
Mayor Maryanne Kusaka

Kaua'i's visual beauty makes this island such a special place. Those of us who have lived here all of our lives, and those who have recently come, realize the island's abundance in so many ways - the panoramic sights that have been written about and used in song here and throughout the world, – miles of golden sand that lace the island's coco palm shoreline, - crystal blue waters beyond our beaches, - towering waterfalls that grace our verdant valleys and landscapes that provide rolling and colorful view corridors to the sea. It is an island that demands superlatives.ays
No matter what crisis or challenge awaits us, all we need do is to progress toward the shared vision of economic prosperity and strive toward the highest quality of life. For truly, our legacy will be realized not by what we do today, but by what we leave for tomorrow – for those who come after us. And for inspiration, we need only to look around us at the inherent beauty of Kaua'i and into the faces of her children to realize that we are much closer to paradise than we might have imagined.

Kaua'i is diverse, yet one island, many peoples and all Kauaians – warm, friendly, and sharing. This is the foundation of the Kaua'i Aloha Endowment, focused on so much positive energy and hope for the future.

Aloha Pumehana

Recognition

It is important to recognize and appreciate the continued support of the staff of the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, in particular Nani Larsen and William Trugillo of the Kaua‘i office of HCF with the guidance of the President and CEO, Kelvin Taketa. A heart-felt Mahalo to all who have contributed to the Kaua‘i Aloha Endowment during October, November and December, 2002.

Aloha—The Joy of Service in Action

The Kaua'i Aloha Endowment is about 'you', about 'me' and about 'us'Éit is truly a 'we' endeavor. A collective community endowing itself and uniting Kauaians and Kauaians-at-heart in Aloha. We are making history and LEAVING A LIVING LEGACY for generations to come.

We congratulate and welcome our new Mayor Bryan Baptiste as our Honorary Chairman of the Kaua'i Aloha Endowment. We look forward to working together for years to come.

Celebrate What We Have Achieved Together

- Our Kaua'i Aloha Endowment benefit screening at the Kilauea Theater, featuring Pierce Brosnan in his acclaimed 'Evelyn', was very successful - two sold out performances with a champagne reception. Thanks to Pierce and Keely Brosnan, Roberta Haas, Kaua'i's Hindu Monastery, Barbara Curl and many more who contributed to this lovely evening. We appreciated the following major contributors: Patty Ewing-Kong Lung, Damon Marc-Kilauea Theater, Matt Ernsdorf & Mike Moore-The Lighthouse Bistro, Skip-Aloha Smiles, Kelly Hoen, GM, Quentin Flores, Director of Catering and Eddie Toppenio, Catering Manager ~ Princeville Hotel, Allen Alapai, and Liz Ronaldson and Marit McHugh, Growing Greens Nursery. The idea was created by Roberta, and her daughter Courtney Haas Welborn, with Pierce and Keely Brosnan. It was planned and all happened within three weeks, and they also hosted the champagne reception. We also had a lovely display of our Aloha Products for sale... thanks to our product distribution team of Barbara Smith, Michele Williams and her daughter, Haley, and son, John, and Laurie Ho and her parents Stanley and Nadeen Ho who also helped. Thanks to all.

- We thank you all for your enthusiastic response to our Kaua'i Aloha Products. As you know we are offering Greeting Cards, T-Shirts, Posters, Magnets and Decals. At the movie screening our staff were wearing some aprons with our art print as they were selling the products and everyone wanted those tooÉso new products are being created as we speak! We especially want to thank Lucy Kawaihalau, Kaua'i Vacation Rentals, for purchasing 500 boxes of greeting cards for her guests and owners and Jay Furfaro, Radisson Hotel, for purchasing 100 boxes of greeting cards for his VIP hotel guests. We are enrolling new retail stores regularly as sources for our residents and visitors to purchase our products. They make extraordinary gifts for yourselves and friends and you are making a difference by building the Endowment.

IMMEDIATE NEEDƒCAN YOU HELP? We are requesting immediate donated storage space for our Aloha products, 8'x8'x20'(Matson container size or its equivalent, 12x12 or 12x15), dry and accessible, Kapaa first choice or Lihue area. Call Barbara Curl at 826-4242. Thanking you in advance!

Committee Reports

Our Campaign for Community Awareness and Marketing Committee, with Tsunami Marketing, will be offering to all of us the Endowments branding, logo, and new brochure by early summer. A wonderful video soon to follow.

- Our Grant Giving and Accountabilities Committee, headed by Marilyn Wong, is creating a process that honors and expresses the integrity of the Endowment. This is an important year for all of us for it completes the circle. Our first grant will be offered in November, 2003 during Philanthropy Month. Our Grant Giving philosophy has been created and the amount offered will be determined based on the interest available at that time to invest in our Kauaian community. What specifically it will be given for will be decided as the Endowment grows and the need is determined. In August we will be sharing our Grant Giving process with our Kauaian community.

- Congratulations to Barbara Bennett, Island Coordinator of Kauaian Days and Chair of our Community Resource/Meetings Committee. It was a first ever event with the theme of Celebrating Our Unity While Honoring Our Diversity. A great job done by all! Thank you for sharing the message of the Endowment along with the message and events of Kauaian Days.

How You can Make a Difference

- There are four ways to contribute to Building the Endowment at this time: Financially, In-Kind Service, Purchasing or Selling Products, and most of all each of us can Share the Message of the Endowment with everyone.

- The following products are offered from the Endowment for purchase for you and as gifts for your family and friends. These purchases will contribute to Friends of Kaua'i Aloha Endowment which will then help to expand the infinite possibilities of attracting what is needed for us to "Build our Endowment." The products - Aloha T-shirts, Magnets (round and square), Posters, Notecards and Decals, are just beginning to be sold in local stores that support the Endowment. Please see the enclosed flyer for more information. These products range from $.75 to $20.00 and can be purchased in quantities for business and holiday gifts. Everyone can now be included in contributing to the Endowment.

- A unique program is under way, created in partnership with Kaua'i's hotels, vacation rental industry and activity destinations to raise funds from off island for Friends of Kaua'i Aloha Endowment. The program is to auction donated hotel and vacation rental packages on eBay. We've found that it's created another marketing opportunity to position and expose Kaua'i as a premier destination. Linda Masterson is heading the Hotel Program and Barbara Smith is heading the Vacation Rentals Program. A special thank you to Craig Maas for co-creating with us the original idea and offering his beautiful Hale Mana home as our first vacation rental. Stephanie Kaluahine Reid offered our first hotel package which included a stay at the Princeville Hotel, tours of Limahuli Gardens and Na Aina Kai Gardens, and dinner for two at Postcards Cafe. Thanks to you all. Please invite your friends and family to explore our occasional eBay offerings for their next visit. It's a real value.

What's Ahead

We have a busy year ahead, and with your help, we will work toward the completion of Phase II: Sharing the Message ~ Building the Endowment. We are continuing to create our internal structure, completing our initial Campaign for Community Awareness, (branding, logo, brochure, video, etc.,) and raising $1 million dollars (approx. $50,000 to grant), and creating our Grant Giving and Accountabilities format. You’ll also see two events this year as well as the continued sales of the Aloha Products to enroll Kauaians and Kauaians-at-heart in the Endowment. Soon we will have a visitor awareness endeavor in partnership with the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau. This year we will also need to create a formal Endowment Development and Volunteer Committee.

We are all stewards and co-creators in this endeavor. Please join us in making history for Kaua‘i, Kauaians, and Kauaians-at-heart.
