Why has Kauai Aloha Endowment been created?
This is the only Endowment fund benefitting Kauai which can receive charitable donations from the public. Without such an Endowment, Kauai will miss out on receiving a share of the $6 trillion to $25 trillion in bequests Boston College researchers now estimate will be given to charities over the next 55 years from the coming intergenerational transfer of wealth. This Endowment has been created to allow Kauai to receive a share of these bequests and other contributions.

Where did the idea come from?
The idea of endowing the island of Kauai was presented to an Island-wide Visioning Gathering in 1998. The group agreed that the Kauai Aloha Endowment would support and contribute to the Vision, Aloha: It’s Kauai’s Spirit.

Why an Endowment?
Endowment stresses that contributions are not spent but rather invested in perpetuity thus benefiting the community forever and providing a permanent and growing source of income to support projects and programs on Kauai. Only the interest earned from the Endowment is used to fund Kauai’s projects, never the donations themselves.

How will the interest be spent?
The Kauai Aloha Endowment has an advisory board composed of Kauai residents. Each year the advisors will choose programs and projects to receive grants from the interest earned on the accumulated Endowment donations, based on the Endowment’s vision and purpose and the amount of grant funding available. More specifically, initial grants will be made to benefit all Kauaians and Kauaians-at-heart in these areas: environment, sacred Hawaiian places, health and safety, and culture and the arts. The advisor’s recommendations are subject to review and final approval by the Hawaii Community Foundation's Board of Governors.
